Riccardo Mancini (1951-2007), in memoriam

Yesterday morning it suddenly disappeared in Frascati (Rome), Riccardo Mancini (born in Rome in 1951), a professional journalist and founder in 1997 of Adverbs Editions, a publishing house specializing in scientific and critical approach to the unusual, who had just recently celebrated ten years of activity (see here ).

A personal note to pay the family my deepest condolence was an action / review of Mancini (which I got to know in person a few year later) on the weekly as consumer The buoy, where he had a regular column, back in 1994 to confirm the street on which, through the readings of an episodic not yet eighteen, I started to progress and I'm still walking, in the field of rational approach to the phenomena of the unusual. Bill Ellis on "anime" and pop culture

On Theofantastique ( here), John W. Morehead interviewed folklorist Bill Ellis (whom I have already referred here) concerning anime (animations Nippon) and popular culture.

Ellis says among other things:

First of all, popular culture and folklore are Closely related, since Both That Relate to topics and issues many people choose to be Involved in. Folklore picks up many themes from popular books and TV shows, and the producers of popular media are Constantly monitoring contemporary folklore and finding ways to include it in Their productions. So, just as I was Constantly watching the popular media, like the Harry Potter Phenomenon, for insights into common persons' interest in the occult, I know too That Immediately saw the dramatic growth of interest in anime Had a strong folk element.

Journey in Wonderland (2007) by Paola Bertucci

E 'published recently in a text library of historical science Paola Bertucci dedicated to travel in Italy of the French experimental physicist Jean-Antoine Nollet (1700-1770) in 1749 stated purpose of investigating the neck miraculous healings linked to the practice of "tubes medicated" invented by the Venetian Gianfrancesco Pivati. Here are the bibliographic data and the "second cover" of the book, which revises the previous work of academics on the subject since the time of research carried out during the Ph.D. in History of Science (awarded to Oxford in 2001):

Bertucci , Paola (2007). Journey in Wonderland. Science and curiosity in Italy in the eighteenth century. Cambridge: Basic Books.

In 1749 Jean-Antoine Nollet goes on the road for Italy, officially on behalf of the Academy of Sciences in Paris, which is a member. The institution asked him to write a report about the miraculous healings that some Italians claim can be made using the science of the century, electricity. To the south of the French Alps came into contact with a company in which the 'electrician "is a widespread fashion: sparks and attractions animate the evenings in the living rooms and courtyards, passionate ladies and turning the ambitions of academics eager to earn fame and prestige. From Turin to Naples, his meetings with the local intellectual circles offer a unique insight into Italian life science and culture, where even several women are leading actors. Retracing the steps of a journey that will become the symbol of the clash between the 'love of the beautiful' and the 'love of truth "- that is, between surface and credulity rigorous experimental research - this book sheds light on a key figure and a crucial moment in the eighteenth-century experimental science. The author explores the many facets of the relationship between science and wonder in the age of the Enlightenment and documenting new aspects of the trip that invite reflection on the close links of science with politics and economics. The official scientific mission covered the operation of industrial espionage the manufacture of silk yarn, which was commissioned by the French state and made possible by the collaboration of unsuspecting Italians.
